Fia Fiell is the moniker of Vietnamese-Australian synthesist, pianist and composer Carolyn Schofield, whose intricate and fluid compositions derive from meditations on deep listening, growth and transcendence. Drawing on her virtuosic facility as a classical pianist, she plays and processes multiple keyboard synthesisers in real time to create otherworldly soundscapes that meld lush melodic cycles, vibrant digital textures and soaring drones. Silk-gentle and profoundly expressive, her distinctive, dreamlike sound worlds seem to spirit-forth from immaterial planes. Time and rhythm are approached as if elastic – like an organic membrane breathing and pulsing autonomically.

A prolific and sought-after performer across the electronic and experimental landscape, she has graced the stages of Australia’s most prestigious cultural institutions, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Centre and Phoenix Central Park, as well as major festivals such as Dark Mofo and Rising. Her solo, ensemble, and spatial works have been commissioned by the Australian Art Orchestra, Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio, Australian National Academy of Music and more.

In addition to her solo practice, she has collaborated as a synthesist with prominent Australian artists such as Fanning Dempsey National Park, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and Jonnine (HTRK). Her work has also found an international audience, with curated performances and tours across Europe and the USA.

Her release for Sydney's Longform Editions,Endless Filament, demonstrates a dynamic approach to drone music through a constant flowing and unfurling of tones. This work evolves the cyclic melodic language of her debut album, All In The Same Room – with Bandcamp noting that Schofield comes ‘awfully close to perfection’ in her ability to evoke emotions deeper than words can capture. Her recorded output, which includes works for the internationally renowned Room40 label, continues to explore the boundaries of electronic composition.
